Drug Discovery and Development: Today and Tomorrow

Drug discovery involves the hit identification, hit-to-lead, lead optimization to improve the affinity, selectivity, efficacy/potency, metabolic stability, and oral bioavailability. In addition, formulation, drug delivery system and protection of intellectual property are also significantly considered. In drug R&D process, medicinal chemistry is involved with drug design, chemical synthesis and plays a critical role in drug discovery in order to bring new medicines to patients. Medicinal chemistry is an interdisciplinary science involving in synthetic organic chemistry, biochemistry, cheminformatics, pharmacology and various other biological sciences.

Despite rapid advances in technology and better understanding of biological systems, drug discovery is still a lengthy, expensive, difficult, and inefficient process with low approval rate of new medicines. To implement to higher success in drug discovery, development of in vitro and in vivo predictive models of efficacy and safety in humans and establishment of clinical development strategy at early discovery phase are strongly recommended.

This talk presents some key roles of medicinal chemistry in drug R&D, general drug discovery process, and some strategies for successful drug discovery.
